Frequently Asked Questions - Candidates

1. What qualifications do I need to run for the position of Mayor or Councillor?

For the position of Mayor and Councillor you must be:
• a Canadian citizen
• at least 18 years of age
• a resident of the City of Greater Sudbury
• own or lease property in the City of Greater Sudbury (or be the spouse of the owner or lessee)
• eligible to vote, and
• not disqualified to hold office by any legislation

2. What qualifications do I need to run for the position of School Board Trustee?

For the position of School Board Trustee you must be
• a Canadian citizen
• at least 18 years of age
• a resident within the jurisdiction of the Board
• eligible to vote
• Roman Catholic if running for a Separate School Board
• not disqualified to hold office by any legislation
• be a supporter of the Board

3. What are the first steps in becoming a candidate?

In order to become a registered candidate for the 2010 Municipal Election you must:

• Provide identification to show your place of residence
• File a Nomination Paper
• File a Declaration of Qualification (located on Nomination Paper)
• Pay the prescribed filing fee - $200.00 for Mayor and $100.00 for Councillor and Trustee.  Payment can be made by cash, debit, money order or certified cheque.

4. I am running as a School Board Trustee, how do I tell if I have French Language Rights?

You have French-language education rights if you are a Canadian Citizen and can answer 'YES” to any one of the following:

1. Is French the language you first learned and still understand?
2. Did you receive your elementary school instruction in Canada in French? (This does not include French immersion nor French as a second language.)
3. Have any of your children received, or are they now receiving, elementary or secondary school instruction in Canada in French?  (This does not include French immersion nor French as a second language.)

5. Do I have to live in the ward that I want to run in?

To run for Mayor or Councillor you must live, own or lease property in the City of Greater Sudbury.  If you wish to run for Councillor, you do not have to live in the ward. 

To run for school board trustee you must live in the area of jurisdiction.

6. Where and when can a candidate file a Nomination Paper?

Nomination Papers can only be filed in the City Clerk's Office, 200 Brady Street, Tom Davies Square, Sudbury.  Nominations will be accepted starting January 4, 2010 until Thursday, September 9, 2010 from 8:30 a.m. and 4:30 p.m. and on Nomination Day, Friday, September 10, 2010 from 9:00 a.m. to 2:00 p.m.

7. How long is the term of office for the Mayor, Ward Councillors and School Board Trustees?

The term of office for Mayor, Councillors and School Board Trustees is 4 years.  The new term will start on December 1, 2010 and end November 30, 2014.

8. What areas do the current wards encompass for the City of Greater Sudbury?

Ward 1: West End , Gatchell , Copper Park, Robinson, Moonglo, south of Ontario Street and west of Regent Street

Ward 2: Lively, Naughton, Whitefish, Copper Cliff and Worthington

Ward 3: Chelmsford ,Onaping, Dowling and Levack

Ward 4: Azilda, Elm West and Donovan

Ward 5: Val Caron, Blezard Valley, Cambrian Heights, McCrea Heights, Guilletville, Notre Dame – Lasalle area west of Rideau Street

Ward 6: Val Therese and Hanmer

Ward 7: Garson, Falconbridge, Capreol and Skead

Ward 8: New Sudbury (east of Barry Downe Road)

Ward 9: Coniston, Wahnapitae, Wanup and South End (Broder Township)

Area 4 (Ward 7 and Ward 8 - City of Greater Sudbury and the municipalities of French River, Killarney, Markstay-Warren and St. Charles.  Unorganized Townships of Burwash, Cox, Davis, Eden, Hawley, Hendrie, Henry, Janes, Laura, Loughrin, Secord, Servos, Street and Tilton)

10. What happens if there are not enough candidates to fill positions?

In the event there are insufficient number of certified candidates to fill all positions available nominations will be reopened for the vacant positions only on Wednesday, September 15, 2010, between the hours of 9:00 a.m. and 2:00 p.m. and such additional nominations, if required, may be filed in the office of the Clerk.
